    • Established in 2002, Jeddah BioCity - a research facility with close ties to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center - is constructing the first Bio Park in the Middle East with state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratories intended to allow Saudi Arabia to enter the biotechnology sector. Jeddah BioCity is in the process of developing a stem cell research program that would include therapeutic stem cell cloning (which is prohibited in the United States).

    At the bottom of this article (Box 1) is the fatwa issued by the Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) Council of the Muslim World League permitting adult, child, and embryonic stem cell research. The Saudi fatwa permitting embryonic stem cell research is much wider than the highly restrictive limits set by the Bush Administration on federally funded embryonic stem cell research in the United States.
